Tile has been around for many years and will be around for many more to come. Tile in your bathroom or kitchen cannot only be great looking but when installed properly can last for many years.
The knock on tile has been that as time goes on the walls or floors start to lose their luster and leak water. The reason for this is not the tile itself, but the installation of the tile. Tile walls should be installed on cement board, not plaster board or green board. The explanation is simply that cement will last close to forever where the other boards leak after 10 or 15 years. When plaster board or green board starts rotting you will see the grout lines start to get dark because the wall behind the tile is rotting and bleeding through the grout lines. The appearance of mildew is due to poor ventilation or from not properly cleaning the tile with a cleaner such as X-14.
The two keys to remember when picking tile is the larger and lighter the tile, the brighter and larger the bathroom or kitchen will look. We suggest when you are picking tile for bathroom floors select either 8x8 or 12x12, for bathroom walls choose either 6x8 or 8x10, and for kitchen floors the tile should be at least 12x12. We also recommend that when picking your tile color it should be of the lighter variety for bathroom walls and kitchen floors. Bathroom floors can be dark with light tile walls or bathroom floors can be light with light tile walls. The main thing is that you are happy with what you have chosen because tile is the most important part to complete the look and design of your bathroom or kitchen area.
